Rescue Me Recycling Week challenge
We have been taking part in National Recycling week in outdoor learning this week. This year’s theme is Rescue Me and recycling fits in well with the environmentally friendly award in the outdoor learning pioneer scheme.
The outdoor learning session started with a sorting game where various item cards needed to be sorted and placed into the correct bin, with KS1 having slightly easier items to sort than KS2.
The KS2 classes then investigated a biodegradable timeline and all seemed surprised to learn that a banana skin takes two year to biodegrade!
All the classes had a go at a Rescue Me task; we used old coffee sacks that could have ended up in landfill and repurposed them into bunting. The boys enjoyed decorating their own bunting flag and then we used all the bunting they had created to decorate the outdoor learning shelter. We had a large number of coffee sacks and some of the boys asked if they could Rescue them further. They came up with some very creative ideas such as making costumes or using then as sleeping bags and pillows.
We hope our outdoor learning topic will inspire pupils to think more about recycling and re-using items all areas of learning and at home.
